Miss Universe- What A Journey

One night, January 31st, 2016 I decided to randomly apply to Miss Universe Canada because I thought, "I am a responsible young woman with a bold voice and a story that can relate to hundreds of thousands of young women..."

Not thinking a whole lot of it at the time, I am so beyond grateful now. Only a couple weeks in and I've met SO many awesome girls, had a fun photo shoot AND I MET MISS UNIVERSE! YA! Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Philippines! (The beautiful, graceful woman who accepted the crown after Steve Harvey made the mistake of announcing Miss Colombia as the winner...) How humble and down to earth

Thank you SO much, Pia for your courage, words of wisdom and demonstrating that beauty really does come from the inside out.
Lots of love ,
Dorothy (Colleen Rennie)

I can't say it enough, thank you for making me smile so big today from your presence to your simplistic, yet wise words @piawurtzbach and welcome to Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦! It was an honour to hear you speak today and thank you for taking the time to speak to the youth in Toronto about #anti-bullying, as it is very close to my heart- no doubt you'll inspire/influence plenty of youth in that room. Thank you for standing up for those who can or cannot find their voice, as it can be hard. But if we stick together and share our experiences maybe we can shred that stigma and negativity.#SpeakUp#StandUp Use your voice boldly, but gracefully💙 #MissUniverse#PiaWurtzbach #Toronto#MissUniverseCanada #contestant#honoured #February28th2016 #Pia#DorothySays #PiaSays #dontbeabully#bekindtooneanother#IfeelLikeIwonAnOscar #OscarWinner

Diversity Of Thought

Lately I have been trying to #challenge myself to #embrace and #encourage true #diversity of #thought. Not because I've never taken others in to consideration- we all have our opinions, I certainly know that by now- but when #collaborating with a group we all bring such unique, different perspectives and if we tried to welcome differences and change, especially those that seem foreign but is merely a tweak- what would the 🌍 look like? My #MissUniverseCanada girls and I have been discussing lots of ideas for a fundraising event, one of awareness too and one option considered was a cocktail party, which for the record is never a bad idea-I know our #society embraces celebration and fun times with alcohol, TRUSTTTT ME! But just because I don't drink alcohol doesn't mean I'm anti-alcohol, I'm just a lot more informed and with that said I said to my girls "what if we didn't do an event where alcohol was included? The increase of fetal alcohol syndrome and overall romanticizing the way we use alcohol is almost too much"...As I have always said: to each their own. Never ever do I or would I judge other people's life choices, it's hypocritical yes, but more importantly my job in life is not to bring people down, it's to lift them up to see that, despite adversities, "failures," which are really accessed opportunities to grow,  they too can reach their optimal potential whatever that may be! There are NO #limits except the ones we give ourselves. Why?

Because I have a voice that speaks for some of the most vulnerable individuals in our country and I believe we need to talk. As simple as the company Bell has made it with #LetsTalk- a campaign focusing on mental health and raising awareness. The awareness can continue, but the actions need to take place, not just the words.

Dogs are a families best friend!

I have to post this, whether anyone else sees it is besides the point. It's for me... I love when my dad finds it in him to express how he feels (lightly anyways

whenever a dog has left our farm to head into the big sky, which has been twice that I have observed- it gets my pop. We are all hurt, that dog took a lot of love with him. But we have his brother and sister and half sister ......

My Job, My Passion, in one article.

Here are just some of the “secrets” special education teachers want you to know:
1. “It is the best job in the world. You get to be part of people’s lives in a very important way. You will be changed forever.”

2. “My job isn’t ‘sad.’ Yes, although sometimes sad things happen when you educate children with complex special needs and medical fragility (such as seizures, illness or even a student passing away), my job isn’t ‘sad’ like many people often ask me. I find so much joy in my job! I get to form bonds with my students and their families in ways many other educators don’t get to experience, often over the course of many years. And I get to truly see them progress, no matter how small that progress may seem to the outside world.”
3. “Parents feel like they often have to fight the system to make sure their child gets what they deserve. We are on your side! We want what’s best for them, too.”
4. “Sometimes the hardest part is convincing the kids I work with that they are capable of so much more than they give themselves credit for.”
5. “[My] job doesn’t end when the bell rings, or when the children leave the classroom or even on a holiday vacation.”
6. “We don’t do it for the rest of the world. We do it for the quiet moments [when] amazing things happen. We do it for the smiles, the gains, the tears… We do it for the parents and families of the children we work with, we do it for the trust these children give to us and we don’t ever breach that trust.”

7. “I wish the world knew what an amazing job this is. I wake up every day with a smile ready to see my kiddos. I can’t imagine any other job that is as rewarding as this one!”
8. “I love my kids and would do anything for them, but if they are sick, please leave them at home. It’s not good for them or me to have a sick learner.”
9. “My students teach me more than I will ever teach them.”
10. “Don’t tell too many people, but I have the best job and teacher could ask for. I get to develop lifelong relationships with my students and their families. And watching my students learn and grown is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world.”
11. “I wish parents knew that we don’t always like the labels put on kids either. Your child is more than a diagnosis.”
12. “We want the world for your child, just like you do. We wish we could provide all the services and supports you want for your child, but there are many things beyond our control. We do the best we can while fighting for what each student needs.”

13. “I don’t stop thinking about my students when they leave my class or school. I know I’ll look back in 10 or 20 years and still wonder about them, wishing I knew how they’re doing and that their lives have turned out happily.”

14. “My kids in special education are as smart as yours in general education. It’s just that the world is set up to honor traditional ‘smart,’ not a creative, unique, incredible, unorthodox ‘smart.’” YES!!!!!!
15. “I have to say the job is exhausting. However, in saying that, I am proud to be exhausted. Because my exhaustion means the students I teach are closer to meeting their personal goals. They have spent the day forming bonds with their peers and learning valuable life skills. Together we have overcome many challenges and celebrated successes. It is the kind of exhausted you feel after a hard gym session, only much, much better.”

16. “I hate when people tell me I’m a saint for doing what I do. I do it because I love it. The kids are amazing.”
17. “Sometimes choices are made for us about what and how we teach by people who are not in the schools or classrooms.”
18. “Every single student I have ever taught is ‘my child.’ I love them, I worry about them, I lose sleep over them. Their successes are my successes. Their struggles are my struggles.”.....Maybe not so much quite yet as I am trying to maintain a professional boundary and not let it drown me at night due to my sensitivity hehe.
19. “I wish everyone knew how much our students want to learn and how hard they try.”
20. “Listening to the voices of adults with disabilities has made me a much more compassionate, aware and thoughtful educator. I am so grateful in particular to autistic adults, as I primarily work with autistic young people. There’s always room for me to grow — I promise to keep listening.”
21. “Special education teachers don’t do the work for their students. They make the curriculum more accessible for their students or they give them work at their ability level.”
22. “Our students are just like any other child. They have incredible hearts and big personalities. They have extraordinary talents. They have good days and not so good days. Though they may have behavioral challenges, that does not mean they are ‘bad’ or ‘lazy.’ Though they may learn differently, they can learn. Don’t underestimate or pity them. And most importantly, don’t limit them.”
23. “The fulfillment I get from making a difference in a child’s life, even if just a small one, is the best feeling in the world! It makes all of the long days, nights [and] weekends full of lesson planning and paperwork worth it!”
24. “It fulfills my heart like nothing else could.”
.....so well said. Fulfillment my friends, is a beautiful thing.

Challenging myself

So for this pageant, I want to go in feeling my best and in order to do that I have to take care of myself both mentally and physically- no problem. I have been active and physical during my recovery the entire time as its one of the few things that keeps me sane (anyone for that matter) BUT never have I made ..strenuous or aiming for a particular goal.

Until now.

I want to be strong, not just skinny. I'm a tall girl so when I lose weight my arms look lanky and frail but they are really quite strong right now. More importantly, I am challenging myself to an accountability group that 2 of my dear family friends, Kimberely and Jamie Fitzpatrick, are literally coaching. They are both double diamond beach body coaches and I have had the pleasure of being able to observe their hard work over the past year and it has never ceased to amaze me how hard they work given their busy lives and! THOSE RESULTS ! Unreal so thanks to you two!
I'm in so much pain but it's worth it!

I had a phone interview today...

Received a phone call Monday morning...

Shocked and amazed,

That's life! That's life.. That's what all the people say!

But j know I'm gonna change that tune, when I'm back on top in June! -Frank Sinatra

Yesterday I received a phone call from the Miss Universe Canada pageant! Can you believe it?! I can't!
I can and I can't.
It's one of those things like watching a Victoria secret show (not comparing myself) and thinking "ya that'd be nice! I wish I could strut my stuff like that..." And now I have a chance.
I used to wear a Tshirt swimming and now I'll be hopefully in a classic Dorothy bather, which consists of high waist class, but regardless AHH!
So honoured to be simply recognized!
Love Dorothy
Have a spectacular day.

Attitude and Worth

Attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure... SO TRUE. Absolutely ! Your attitude determines your intentions each and every day and it's easy to have a poor one, especially when you can go out of your way looking for them- "ugh Monday. (I hear you) another cold, snowy day." "Another day to be alone" or "why bother?" I'll tell you why: because we need you. If you're an absolute stranger to me and reading this I can still tell you we need you. Every one has something important, a purpose if you will, to bring to this world.
Sometimes we learn that through heart breaks, loss or maybe it's been instilled into your life already. I can't tell you all exactly how, when, or what but I can tell you why: think of something. Anything, good or bad, as this technique works for either. Now take a $100 bill or a $20- even a $5! It doesn't matter but do this with me: crumple it up. I'm serious. Do it! How much is it worth? The same.

Now throw it on the floor, stomp on it, JUMP on it. Now how much is it worth? The same ⚡️trying bending it and breaking it; NOW even if your money ripped, we have band aids or tape that can put it back together and the $$ is worth the same. In other words, no matter what happens to you YOUR WORTH THE SAME.
Now apply that same thinking to who you are. No matter how much you've been torn apart, knocked to the ground, "failed," you're still worth the same but YOU need to believe it. #DorothySays #LifeOfDorothy #worth #selfworth #selfcare #therapy #mentalhealth #mentalillness #life #purpose #meaning #youreworthit #challenge #attitude #ordeal #adventure #journey #grief #depression #anxiety #educator #selfadvocate

Miss Universe Canada

So yesterday was the cut off for#MissUniverseCanada 2016 and I've oddly contemplated it for a couple weeks and time was passing by and by and I didn't think twice about it- till the other day.
Someone or something brought my attention the page and despite my lack of "professional" photos ,I sent in my basics- aka me smiling and one wearing a bathing suit.
By no means do I honestly expect a call back or whatever they call it, but if I had the chance I think I would make one hell of a candidate, and not because I'm tall or can smile. But because I truly believe in myself and my abilities to make, or see, change big or small; I'm determined as I've ever been and I'm only in one school- imagine I could use my voice for more schools? . I have my own little nerdy book collection so that, in the case this doesn't work out, I'll stick to my program and change education self-esteem for all the youth and nay Sayers. If you want change you gotta be the change-
